SIZZLING IN SARNO
The sizzling summer sun made racing at Sarno in August a real challenge for the drivers who could get little respite with masks, to limit Covid -19 transmission, replacing helmets at all times.
Times were incredibly close amongst the majority of drivers and the hard fought heats saw many incidents across both OK and OKJ classes.
Turney started in p4 for every heat and was disappointed that contact on lap one in heat one dropped him down the order. A determined fight back saw him take p7, and fastest lap, followed by P2,a win and P5. It was due to these determined drives that he secured grid three for the final.
In a relatively sedate final Turney held P2 for a while but eventually finished a deserved p3. A well earned podium for Turney and the Tony Kart Racing Team.
With Spain still struggling with the Covid -19 Pandemic it took a mammoth effort by the organisers and Zuera staff to put on a safe and well managed event.
In the summer sun an incredibly close qualifying saw Turney take third in his group but pushed down to 9th overall with a dead heat for pole and the top ten drivers separated by just 0.155s
With the heats starting so well with a fastest lap, P4 and P2 the momentum was to take a blow as contact and damage meant that despite another P2 the effect of the DNF was to push Turney back to P12 on the grid.
From the outside it is always a challenge to get into the race without incident but Turney showed skill and racecraft to move steadily through the field to finish a creditable P4,
A reasonable qualifying session delivering fourth in group did not really show the full potential of the package but this was soon displayed in the heats.
Setting an immediate impression Turney set about delivering solid results recording a win, two seconds and a fourth in challenging heats.
The prefinal saw Turney again fighting at the front before getting spun around on the last lap when fighting for the lead which ended his race early and, as he was not in the top 17 finishers, he was unable to race the final. A disappointing end to an otherwise positive weekend.
Getting a qualifying lap in was not possible for Turney due to a thankfully rare technical issue.
Typically determined, and despite having to start at the back of every heat, Turney dug deep and put on a masterclass performance to carve his way through the pack overtaking 37 drivers in the three heats giving him a great chance to be at the front for the finals.
Despite a great challenge Turney was unable to fight for the wins and with the final two rounds of WSK Super Masters awarding bumper points his championship lead was quickly eroded.
Turney now heads to Sarno in what is proving to be a very demanding compacted season.
After a long delay due to the Covid -19 pandemic karting returned to the Adria circuit to conclude the remaining two rounds of the WSK Super Masters Series which would now both take place in Adria instead of La Conca and Sarno.
Following a very unusual format round three would be held over Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday with round 4 on Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
Qualifying and the heats produced strong results with a slight technical issue limiting progress in heat one but Turney did not finish out of the top five until the second final where a DNF in a points loaded final cost him the chance to fight for the Super Masters title at the end of the week.
Starting from grid five at a sun drenched South Garda Karting Circuit, Turney hits the front on lap six and leads every lap until the chequered flag.
Turney, in group one for quali, could only watch as the track got faster for groups two and three. He made steady progress in the heats including a dominant win with fastest lap showing that if he got to the front he could not be caught.
Going off grid 6 he managed the race expertly to take the win and right the wrong of Adria.
A dominant performance overall from the Tony Kart driver with his team mate completing a 1-2 in the Senior class.
Turney now leads the 2020 WSK Super Masters Series Championship.

WINTER CUP WIN
South Garda hosted the 25th prestigious Winter Cup over the weekend of 14-16th February 2020. Turney, cruelly robbed of victory in Adria two weeks previously, would not be denied again.
Despite completing only three heats due to an unfortunate DNF, Turney won the 'Super Heat' from grid 8 delivering a tricky grid 11 start for the main final.
In a display of karting brilliance Turney carved his way through the talented field hitting the front on lap 13 and did not yield the position again.
Turney was joined on the podium by his team mate delivering a 1 -2 for the Tony Kart Racing team.
Turney's first race weekend of 2020 was looking likely to bring his first win of the season until rear end contact from another kart span him out of the lead with just an agonising few laps remaining. With no time to recover he crossed the line a disappointing sixth.
Joe was not the fastest over the weekend but was certainly the driver who demonstrated the most commitment to take the wins. Expert driving and race management delivered superb results all weekend.
A win that should have been his but instead fell to his team mate to fly the Tony Kart Racing team colours on the top step.
