Joe Turney, 17, has been named the iZone Motorsport UK (formerly “MSA”) Young Driver of the Year 2018.
One of four finalists from the Motorsport UK AASE academy shortlisted for the prestigious award, Turney attended a day of examinations at iZone, Silverstone, last week. He underwent physical, mental and simulation assessments and gave a presentation to the judging panel - Stephen Lickorish (Deputy Editor of Motorsport News), Anna Kemp (Loughborough College Programme Leader), James Wozencroft (Motorsport UK Performance Manager), Neil Riddiford and James Pratt (iZone representatives) - before participating in an interview. Following the day of rigorous tests, Turney was announced as Young Driver of the Year, becoming the first karter to win the award since its introduction in 2010.
Turney’s award comes after an incredible year of championship and title grabs which saw him become one of the most decorated karters in history. In Senior X30, Turney took the win at the IAME International Final - the world championship equivalent in the class - and the British Championship title. In Senior Rotax, Turney became BNL Champion and took the Kartmasters Grand Prix title at PFI.
